Visiting Franz Josef Glacier and Glacier Country

Orange sheep campervan park is the perfect base to explore Franz Josef Glacier, Fox Glacier, Okarito, Lake Matheson and beyond. There are a variety of free walks in the area to suit all ages and abilities. The Department of Conservation (DOC) visitor centre is directly opposite our entrance in the Glacier Base building.

All of Franz Josef’s restaurants are within walking distance and King Tiger Eastern restaurant is just next door – offering drink specials and good value food.

The Franz Josef glacier guide Heli hikes, Skydive Franz and DOC visitor centre are opposite the campervan park in the Glacier Base building.

Waiho hot tubs are also just next door- the perfect luxurious way to wind down and relax.

Franz Josef is home to Skydive Franz who offer the highest skydive in New Zealand of up to 18000ft. A variety of scenic helicopter flight companies (Glacier Helicopters, Franz Heliservices, Glacier Country Helicopters and The Helicopter Line) are based just a few minutes walk away as well as the West Coast Wildlife Centre where you can see New Zealand’s rarest Kiwi. Guided walks to the glacier and other beautiful places are offered by Glacier Valley Eco Tours and for rainy (or sunny) days we suggest the Greenstone carving at Te Koka Gallery. Franz Josef wilderness tours offer exciting quad tours through the forest and also a variety of tours on the nearby beautiful Lake Mapourika. Whether you prefer a Kayak tour, a relaxing cruise and hot drink on their all weather boat or even a fishing tour for a chance at catching a salmon or trout Franz Josef wilderness tours have something for everyone.

Two of New Zealand’s premier day walks are in the area -Roberts Point is the closest you can access the glacier without a helicopter. Allow about 5 hours return via stunning swing bridges and rainforest tracks taking you high along the side of the Franz Josef Glacier Valley. Alex’s Knob takes about 6 hours return – taking you high up the side of the Glacier valley giving breathtaking views into the Glacier. For a much quicker and easier view of the glacier, both Sentinel rock and Franz Josef glacier valley walk take only 20 minutes return and offer views of the glacier.

For guests we offer discounts for scenic flights, restaurants, West Coast wildlife centre and Waiho hot tubs.
