Alex Knob or Roberts Point – Which Franz Josef Hike is Right for You?
Franz Josef is known for its stunning walking tracks, and two of New Zealand’s best day hikes are Alex Knob and Roberts Point. Both offer incredible glacier views, lush native bush, and that wild West Coast atmosphere — but they’re very different experiences. Here’s how to choose the one that’s right for your adventure style.
Alex Knob Track – Panoramic Views from the Top

Distance & Time: ~17 km return, 6–8 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to hard (steep sections, sustained climb)
Best For: Full-day hikers, photography enthusiasts, big view chasers
The Alex Knob Track climbs steadily through native forest before opening up to wide alpine tussock slopes. On a clear day, you’ll have breathtaking views over Franz Josef Glacier, the Southern Alps, and out to the Tasman Sea.
Why You’ll Love It:
- Unmatched panoramic views from the summit
- Well formed and easy to follow track
- Great sense of achievement when you reach the top
Things to Consider:
- This is a long hike to the summit— although there are two view points along the way
- Weather can change quickly at higher altitudes; always check the forecast
- Best tackled early morning in good conditions for maximum visibility
Roberts Point Track – Close-Up Glacier Views

Distance & Time: ~11 km return, 5–6 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to hard (some steep and slippery rock sections)
Best For: Adventurers who want a close-up glacier experience without climbing to alpine heights
The Roberts Point Track winds through lush rainforest, across spectacular swing bridges, and up to the closest viewpoint of Franz Josef Glacier. You’ll hear rushing rivers, see waterfalls, and eventually stand at the historic Roberts Point viewing platform with the glacier right in front of you.
Why You’ll Love It:
- Stunning rainforest and river scenery
- Thrilling swing bridges and varied terrain
- The closest views of Franz Josef Glacier without a helicopter
Things to Consider:
- Track can be slippery after rain — wear sturdy footwear
- Some exposure on swing bridges and narrow sections
- Weather can affect track safety — check DOC updates and weather forecast before heading out
Which One Should You Choose?
- Choose Alex Knob if you want a full-day alpine challenge with stunning summit views.
- Choose Roberts Point if you want a varied, adventure-style walk that brings you face-to-face with the glacier.
If you have the time and energy, both are incredible but most travellers pick one depending on their schedule and fitness level.
An Easier Option – The Glacier Valley Walk
If you’re looking for an easier way to see Franz Josef Glacier, the Glacier Valley Walk is a fantastic choice. This well-maintained track takes around 30 mins return and offers beautiful views of the valley and the glacier from a safe viewing platform. It’s suitable for all fitness levels, and you’ll still enjoy that sense of standing in a truly spectacular alpine landscape
