1. Sip a Coffee at the Franz Josef Heliport
Ok this ones not quite free but there’s something special about grabbing a coffee from one of the local cafes and heading across the road to the public view point at the heliport while watching helicopters come and go against a backdrop of the glacier valley. You’ll get a close up view of these incredible machines and some cool photo opportunities — without spending more than the price of your coffee.
2. Spot Glow Worms After Dark
Franz Josef is home to magical glow worm colonies that light up the night. One of the best spots is near the start of the Tatare Tunnels Track or the Terrace walk, where you can wander under a canopy of stars and see tiny lights twinkling in the bush. Remember to bring a torch!
3. Take a Scenic Hike
