What Regenerative Tourism in Franz Josef means
It’s tourism that restores ecosystems, supports communities, and gives travellers a deeper connection to the places they visit. Here in Franz Josef Glacier, we’re surrounded by one of the most beautiful environments in New Zealand — ancient rainforest, spectacular glaciers, and rare native birds.
Our Commitment at Orange Sheep
We’re proud to be part of a growing movement in Franz Josef that’s rethinking what it means to travel sustainably. Here’s how we’re doing our bit:
1. Going Electric
We’re transitioning toward electric infrastructure — from our electric vehicle to converting to LED lighting and using sensors to reduce energy usage in the park. Every new project we take on is designed with energy efficiency in mind.
2. Respect for Water
Franz Josef’s pure water is one of our greatest gifts. We strongly encourage guests to refill their water bottles!
3. Waste
We provide recycling bins and encourage guests to minimise the amount of waste they collect. Franz Josef is a remote mountain village and rubbish is trucked a very long way to the nearest landfill. Please take your rubbish if you are able to!
4. Habitat Care
We’ve partnered with predator free Westland to remove cats, stoats and rats from the park. We plant natives trees and leave buffer zones of untouched forest between our sites. The birdlife at Orange Sheep is incredible. From cheeky Kea wandering through the park to Tui, Bellbirds, and Kererū filling the forest with song each morning.
5. Supporting the Local Community
Regeneration isn’t just about nature — it’s about people too. We are locally owned, employ locally, sponsor local community projects and promote local experiences so visitor’s spending stays right here on the West Coast.
Why It Matters
Franz Josef’s future depends on keeping its natural beauty intact. Every guest who stays here is part of that story. Regenerative tourism gives everyone a way to contribute: Travel thoughtfully, tread lightly, and leave something positive behind.
Our Promise
At Orange Sheep, we want every guest who stays with us to feel connected: to the environment, to the people, and to the natural wonder that is Franz Josef Glacier. Because when you care for a place, it gives back, in the form of still mornings, curious birds, and that feeling of peace you can only find in the rainforest.
